Percutaneous Coronary Angiogram

What is it?

This is a procedure done under local anaesthetic to assess the condition of the blood vessels in your heart. This also includes aneurysm (abnormal ballooning of the heart wall), heart arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) and birth defects.

How is it done?

A small catheter is inserted through your wrist, arm, or groin artery into the heart. Contrast dye is injected into the blood vessels around your heart. X-rays are taken to assess the condition of your heart and detect any narrowing or blockages. This is normally a day procedure and you are likely to be discharged home that evening however we prefer you do not drive yourself.

Preparation

This is normally performed at one of the Private Hospitals in Hamilton by your Cardiologist. A full explanation of this procedure and any preparation will be given prior.
